Park Güell was commissioned by Eusebi Güell who wanted to create a stylish park for Barcelona aristocracy.

The park contains amazing stone structures (see below), stunning tiling and fascinating buildings. You can see from this picture the Gaudí dragon fountain that is at the entrance to Güell Park. This dragon is adorned in beautiful coloured tiling and there is something rather hypnotic and magical about it.
Here you can see a walkway supported by twisting rock pillars that seem to be growing out of the ground like tree trunks. Although these are rather irregular in shape they do feel strangely natural too.
Gaudí was strongly influenced by natural shapes and used them in his work.
At the top of Güell Park is a terraced area where you get a wonderful view of the park and of Barcelona City. Here you will find multi-coloured tiled mosaic seats as shown in this picture. The vibrant colours of the tiles are truly breathtaking.

Park Güell also has a small house in the park which Gaudí lived in at one stage. The house has now been converted into a museum and contains interesting furniture also designed by Gaudí

Again we knew we could not visit Barcelona and not see this place. So we went back to Viators and got a ticket in advance of our departure from Canada.
We did not have to get up too early. Sandra had left excellent instructions on how to get where we were going. It would require 2 different buses and about 40 minutes. So you can tell by that it was on the other side of the city. We had to do a lot of walking after we got there . This place has lots and lots of steps.

We had a guided tour entirely in English. The tour began at eleven. Our guide , Francisco I think, was very good. He gave us lots of information.
Apparently the original plan was to create a neighbourhood which would be occupied by 60 of the rich and famous of that time. The project was financed by the richest man in the world so money was no object. His name was Guell pronounced WAY. ???

Because it was so far out of town no one was interested in buying or building there, So the project failed and the area became a park instead of a neighbourhood. It is now a UNESCO world heritage site.

I won't bore you with more history but I will post a few of our photos taken today

Gaudi's used his imagination and nature was his biggest influence. He believed that straight lines meant death and curved lines meant life.

Tomorrow we go to see his most famous work  SAGRADA FAMILIA.
