Livorno is the gateway to glorious Tuscany. Visit Florence - the cradle of the Renaissance - home to the Duomo, the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio. Here the Medici fostered a city-state whose cultural legacy is as great as classical Athens. Giants like Dante, Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Galileo infused the West with a new creative spirit. Then there is Pisa, Florence's rival for political power. Pisa, a brash, commercial seafaring town rivaled the great maritime powers of Venice and Genoa. The city was a leader in art and architecture second only to Florence.
We have decided to visit Pisa to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Tour Overview

Departing from Livorno, you will take a short 30-minute motorcoach ride to Pisa, one of Tuscany's most beautiful cities, and where you'll get to explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Il Campo dei Miracoli, or "the Field of Miracles." That's the home of the famed Leaning Tower, which is actually the cathedral's bell tower, as well the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Monumental Cemetery and museums.

A short 15-minute walk brings you to the Piazza dei Miracoli, or Square of Miracles. There, you guide will give you a brief explanation and history of the Tower. Many people ask why it leans, or what was its original purpose? The Tower was meant to be the bell tower for the Cathedral, but due to its faulty design and loose soil beneath it, it didn't come to be. Unfortunately, it started leaning soon after construction started in the 12th Century. Galileo, a native of Pisa, used this structure of wonder and beauty to help him determine his laws of gravity and acceleration. (He used the Cathedral to study the movement of the pendulum, too.) Your guide will give you much more in-depth information about the Tower.

After your short talk, you'll have a 30-minute break to get up close and take pictures before reconvening with your group. Don't let the fame of the Tower distract you from the overall beauty of the other architectural marvels in the Square, all built in the highly original Piasan style. You'll rejoin your guide to learn more about the other buildings as he or she walks you to the Duomo (the Cathedral) and the Baptistry.

You'll then be on your own for an hour to shop, explore and enjoy the beauty of the Piazza. You may want to visit the beautifully decorated cemetery, or Campo Santo, which contains 53 cartloads of earth that the Crusaders brought from Jerusalem.

Your memorable sightseeing day concludes with a walk back to your motorcoach for your scenic return to Livorno and your ship.
