Day 4

We had to get up at 5:30 this morning and breakfast was at 6:00 and we had to be on the bus at 7:45. YUCK

But it was another beautiful sunny day. Breakfast was great and so very well organized.

We boarded and the ferry across the Strait of Belle Isle. The sea was smooth and it was not very cold but we did spend most of the time inside. We actually spent the time visiting with fellow tour members.

We visited a Basque Whaling station at Red Bay. The demonstration was done with a movie and then with diaramas. The work they did was amazing. It is hard to believe how many wales were taken and how they managed to take HUGH wales using the tools they had. Rendering the blubber and packing the barrels back to Spain was an amazing feat.

Some pictures of the displays:

Driving along we can see snow on the hill sides. They have told us that they had a lot of snow this winter and they do not expect the snow to leave until the end of the month. It will begin to snow again in October.

Because the growing season is so short and because these small villages are so small getting fresh vegetables is a serious problem. To help with this members of these communities have initiated a system of what they call community gardens. Basically what happens is that near the middle or end of June the community members get together and they plant small gatden plots. Fences are put around to hopefully keep the moose etc at bayThey plant potatoes and carrots and cabbage and turnip. The garden is tendered by various members and then when the crops are ready they are harvested and used by any members who want them. The produce is shared by all and the crops ane tended and protected by all. There is no ownership involved. They are there for everyone and shared by everyone.

Our room for the night was quite special. We had 2 beds and a lot of sitting areas. The bathroom had a tub and a toilet and the sink was outside of that room.

Tomorrow we head for St.Anthony.
