Yakutat Bay

Today is the day we headed into Yukutat Bay to see the Hubbart Glacier.

It is at the head of Disenchantment Bay. It is longest tidewater glacier in North America. It is 76 miles long and its ice face is 6 miles wide. It starts at Mount  Logan in the Yukon. It is 350 feet high and has 250 feet under the water. It is still a health glacier and it surges ahead at times and receedes at others.

When we first approached we wondered if we would see anything because it was another dull gray day. Like yesterday the sun broke forth and the day was glorious. The views were breathtaking. When we got to the face of the glacier the roar of white thunder was thrilling.

It was calfing regularly and the water was full of burger bits.

Again I cannot do it justice with words so here are a few of the pictures I took. They do not give you the complete picture either but it will at least give you an idea of what sights we were treated to today.

There was an excursion from the ship out into the ice flows. The passengers travelled in a catamaran and they were taken around the shores to look for wild like. They would be on board for 4 hours and then returned to the ship. 146 of the passengers took this excursion. We were not one of them.

There also was a small boat with" crazy people" aboard. I do not know if they were from a cruise ship or where they came from. They were yelling and cheering and waving to the passengers. On two
occasions I saw two of them jump into the water. They were wearing shorts and one young man was bare chested. I know they were not floating among the ice bits for long before they scrambled back aboard.

We dressed for dinner while taking pictures and being thrilled by what we were seeing. This was formal night so we had to dress up. When we arrived in the dining room we were given a new table. This one had a grand view of the glacier right outside the window.

After dinner we returned to our room to watch the end of the Raptors game. We also had to have a good look at the invitations we received.

We are the second most traveled guests again this cruise. We will be recognized and given gifts at the Captain's Circle party. Instead of a luncheon we are invited to attend an exclusive cocktail party with some of the officers. This will take place in the library. It sounds like a special time. This is for the top 40 most traveled guests

Tomorrow morning we are having our deluxe Balcony breakfast( in our room, not on the balcony) and we will be scenic cruising Glacier Bay.
